Driving

Key Points for Driving when you have a diagnosis of diabetes

We advise you:

  • You must declare your diabetes and current treatment when applying for your provisional driving licence.
  • Always check your glucose level before driving and ensure it is above 5.0mmols before starting to drive (remember “five to drive”)
  • Always have something to monitor your glucose level and some hypo treatment with you in your car.
  • If you go hypo whilst driving stop immediately, turn off the ignition and move into a passenger seat to treat your hypo. You must then wait 45 minutes once the hypo has resolved before you start driving again.
  • If doing a long drive you must stop every 2 hours and check your glucose level again.
  • If you don’t follow the rules, you will risk invalidating and losing your licence.
